This Year and History
My brother shared something that was put on a door at work. It said, “Can we uninstall and reinstall 2020. I believe it has a virus.”
And that was just the beginning of our problems for the year.
We’ve now had an uprising precipitated by a video that went viral, showing a white police office putting his knee on a prone black suspect’s neck for almost 10 minutes, suffocating the man. And this was while fellow officers were looking on.
This was shortly after another video went viral, showing a white woman with her dog in Central Park, in New York City, in an area not designated for dogs. When a black man, who was in the park bird watching, pointed this out to her in a friendly manner, she called the police and made it seem like the man was attacking her.
These two incidents have brought out protesters, despite the ongoing pandemic. The president’s response? He had the National Guard called out in DC to repel the protesters. And at one point, he had tear gas used on peaceful protesters to clear them from the streets so he could walk out for a photo op.
The mayor of Washington, DC, responded by having the street sign in front of the White House changed, and a mural painted on the street leading to the White House.
Sigh! These are common knowledge now. I want them to still be common knowledge when my granddaughters are old enough to ask about what happened.
My hope is that I can write something each day. An observation of my times that can be read in the future.
